Gig report, night 1.

I missed a posting spree :( Dratted gig.
Yes, gig... erm. Well, the first act was good, the school orchestra from Cambridge House in Ballymena. Now that sounds like an oxymoron, I know, good school orchestra, but bloody hell this lot could play... and not yer boring archytypeal school band crud either. They carried on through a power cut, they had the place jumping... and their party piece at the end was a piece of music called 'Instant Concert'. The teacher/conductor announced they had to go, but they still had three hours of music left in them, so: three hours music in three minutes! It was astonishing, bits and pieces of everything you can think of all linked together to sound like it had always been like that... possibly the only piece of music EVER to move from 'Rule Brittania' to 'Jingle Bells'.
They were the only act to recieve cries of 'encore' from the audience.
Next up, the Bill Black Scots Cealidh Band from Scotland, accompanied by a troup of Highland Dancers from Derry (I think, not scotland anyway...). Least said, I think, although Murial, the mad piano player ROCKED.
Then we had Kieran McGilligan inflicted on us. He's a throwback to a muical era peculiar to NI and known as 'The Showband Years' with the exception that most of the showbands were actually quite good from what I've heard, and he wasn't.
A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, a whole lot crap.
He did play one sad little song that I liked a lot, and would love to hear sung by someone who doesn't think it's not singing unless the microphone is resting somewhere around your epiglottis.
At least there were no injuries, which is always good. We're possibly the only people in the world who think a good night's work is not doing anything! But you get my meaning :)
Anyway, the lineup for tonight is more promising... at any rate I've heard a couple of the acts before, on tv, and they were quite good.

Date: 2003-09-06 12:30 pm (UTC)"Rule Britannia" mixed with "jingle bells" actually describes the music of Snow Bell from NiGHTS, in a kind of wishy-washy way. So you're privelaged!
